Local elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina were held on October 6, 2024. In these local elections, citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina elected 143 mayors and heads of municipalities, as well as 3,200 councilors and aldermen in both entities, as well as a new assembly of the Brčko District.
The Central Election Commission certified a total of 296 political entities.
A total of 26,089 candidacies were confirmed, of which 25,703 candidates for municipal councils, including 10,983 women. As for the candidates for mayors and heads of municipalities, there are 386 of them, including 29 women.
A total of 3,406,088 voters had the right to vote.
Neum
The results of the local elections in 2024 in Neum confirmed the strong dominance of the HDZ BiH, which once again won the trust of the majority of voters, both for the position of mayor and for the Municipal Council. Dragan Jurković, the only candidate for mayor from HDZ BiH, with 1564 votes, retains his mandate, emphasizing his strong position in local politics.
Five parties competed for seats in the Neum Municipal Council: HDZ BiH, HDZ 1990, HRS, HKDU BiH, and SDP.
HDZ BiH received the most votes with 1230 votes, securing 12 council seats out of a total of 17. HDZ 1990 won 308 votes and three seats, while HRS (141 votes) and HKDU BiH (100 votes) each won one councilor. SDP, with only 10 votes, remained without representation in the council.
The HDZ BiH list holder and current president of the Neum Municipal Council, Daniela Matić, won 563 votes and confirmed her position in the Neum Municipal Council. According to current results, councilors entering the Neum Municipal Council on behalf of HDZ BiH are:
- Danijel Prkačin (320 votes),
- Bruno Krešić (213 votes),
- Mario Čarapina (168 votes),
- Mato Matuško (167 votes),
- Nikola Butigan (145 votes),
- Jure Menalo (143 votes),
- Andrija Matuško (69 votes),
- Barbara Matić (96 votes),
- Sanja Matuško (48 votes),
- Marin Raič (84 votes),
- Ana Glavinić (36 votes).
The HDZ 1990 list holder Ivo Bačić won 164 votes, and together with him, Ivica Karačić (98 votes) and Zoran Krešić (78 votes) enter the council. Josip Bogdanović from HRS, with 65 votes, secures one seat, while the HKDU BiH list holder, Stipe Čapeta, with 88 votes, also enters the council.
The election results confirm the dominance of HDZ BiH in Neum, but leave open the question of how the opposition will adapt to the new political circumstances and strengthen its role in the future.
